Sean Maitland’s season over after surgery

SCOTLAND wing Sean Maitland has played his last game for Glasgow after it was revealed his season is over following shoulder surgery.

The New Zealand-born 26-year-old, who is joining London Irish next season, is still hopeful of recovering in time for the Rugby World Cup, which begins in late September. The shoulder problem meant Maitland played no part in the recent RBS Six Nations and Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: “Sean, who has worked really hard during his rehab, got some tough news last week when it became clear that his shoulder would require surgery.

“The operation at Spire Murrayfield Hospital was a success and he’s targeting to be back for the World Cup. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Sean for his contribution to the club.

“He’s been an excellent player for us and we wish him well at the Rugby World Cup and also next season at London Irish.”

Maitland, who can also play full-back, has 16 caps for Scotland and was part of the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia in 2013. He has made 40 appearances and scored ten tries since joining Glasgow from Canterbury Crusaders in 2012.

Guinness Pro12 leaders Glasgow host Cardiff Blues at Scotstoun tonight looking to continue their push for the semi-finals with only four games of the regular season to go.

Tonight’s game will also act as a tribute evening for long-serving players Alastair Kellock and Dougie Hall, who are both retiring at the end of the season.
