Hawaii event held up by wet weather

THE first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii was postponed after heavy overnight rain left the course at Waialae Country Club unplayable. The first two rounds were put back 24 hours, with the final two rounds scheduled for tomorrow.

The cut will be the nearest number to 60 players, although everyone in the top 70 will get paid.

Heavy rain meant several fairways and bunkers were unplayable because of standing water, with almost four inches falling in the area around the course and Hawaii under a flash-flood watch.

With more rain forecast, organisers were forced to abandon any hopes of playing on Thursday.

The field includes the likes of Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and Justin Rose.
