Argentina's Lionel Messi, cleared to play in the Olympics after striking a late deal with his club Barcelona, celebrated by scoring the opener and creating the winner as the South Americans beat Ivory Coast 2-1 today.
Messi's participation in the Games had been in serious doubt after Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Wednesday that Barcelona was not obliged to release him for the tournament.

But after a deal was struck over insurance cover for potential injury and a commitment that the forward would not play in international friendlies for one year, Messi took the field in Shanghai.

After a lively start from Ivory Coast, who played with plenty of pace and ambition, Argentina went close through forward Sergio Aguero who had a shot saved in the seventh minute and then blasted wide from a promising position 20 minutes later.

Ivory Coast forward Salaman Kalou had an effort disallowed for offside but Argentina were growing in confidence and fluency and after Riquelme had gone close with a free-kick, Messi found the breakthrough.

Riquelme threaded a superb pass into the path of Messi who showed great composure as he effortlessly slotted home.

The Africans fought back though after the break when Sekou Cisse rose superbly at the back post and his firm header flashed past Oscar Ustari to make it 1-1.
Messi, lively throughout, set up Aguero for a shot on goal that was ruled out for offside in the 65th and then with four minutes of normal time remaining he produced the inspiration for the winner.

Jinking in from the left, Messi fired in a low, diagonal drive which was parried out into the path of substitute Lautaro Acosta who slotted into the unguarded goal to ensure Argentina move top of Group A.

Rivals Australia and Serbia drew 1-1 earlier on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi and Rearrangerz dont mix,do they.

However, not even the truest and bluest can disagree that he spoke the truth about Rearrangerz being anti-football last season,he has been proven to be spot on.

Early signs this season are no better of course and "Walter" persisting in the anti-football style is the reason that "Walters" Rearrangerz are out of all European competition for at least one full year.

"Walter" cannot say he was not warned.
Can he.

Could not agree more posts are supposed to be about the article.
Now my view is I dont give a monkeys really about Argentina or the Ivory Coast to tell the truth.
Just a passing page filler to be read or not to be.

I bet the Scotsman moderators got together after Losers Rangers disgrace on Tuesday and made a few decisions. I can see the meeting going along the lines of;

Mod 1: Do we put OF threads up?

Mod 2: Naw they'll just be riddled with abuse and slagging about the teddy bears...oops I mean my beloved...oops I mean Rangers.

Mod 1: Aye yer right, then when the Rangers fans are upset they will retaliate and start slagging off Celtic.

Mod 2: Aye well they tims deserve it most of time.

Mod 1: Aye true, they always beat the jambos so they do.

Mod 2: Aye and us, oops I mean Rangers too when it matters.

Pause

Mod 1: So what are we going to do? We have to put up some threads. Otherwise we're out fo a job.

Mod 2: Aye true, let's do one on Argentina. Ah like they argies, they play in blue in a white and play a good old dirty game of thuggery and hacking and cheating. Aye let's have a thread about the argies.

Mod 1: Aye, Good idea. Maybe we'll avoid all the child abuse posts and religious hatred. Good Idea, Argies it is.

Pause

Mod 1: So have you got anything to say aboot they argies.

Mod 2: Haud on I'm googling cheating thuggery and hacking. (beat) but it's only coming up Rangers FC and Manchester riot.

Mod 1: Just google Argentina.

Mod 2: Aw naw.

Mod 1: Whit?

Mod 2: Lionel Messi's come up.

Mod 1: So whit.

Mod 2: He slagged off the teddy bears...oops ah mean Rangers FC.

Mod 1: So whit are we goinnae dae?

Mod 2: Dunno let me try and find a story about Referees.

Getting a bit neurotic lad.
Could be the reason why they pulled the posts is nothing about the conversations but the lack of reason and verbal abuse.

Anyone know why the thread was pulled on the Rangers story y'day?.
It was all very civilised (from both sides) when I left last night. Will be interesting to see if the Scotsman allows comments today.

You got it wrong! The most boring and repeTITive poster is Timothy Ian Malloy. He already posted this boring stuff on a Hibs story and probably also on one about the flooding and who knows where else. Understand T.I.M. that most of the population of Scotland don't want to be bombarded with the fans of the Old Firm and their mentality which is stuck in the events of several centuries ago. The record is stuck change it!
