Plans lodged for city's first 'store on stilts'

PLANS have been lodged for Edinburgh's first "store on stilts" following a period of public consultation.

Developer Morbaine wants to build an 80,000 sq ft store on the site of a former B&Q on Inglis Green Road, Longstone.

The proposed store is on two levels - with a car park on the ground level and the retail floor on the upper level linked by moving ramps.

Morbaine director Alex Brodie said around 150 people attended a two-day public exhibition on the plans in April.

He said: "The feedback we've received has been overwhelmingly supportive, with nearly 90 per cent of those who completed our questionnaire saying the store would meet a need for more choice in the area."

Several supermarket operators have expressed interest in the site, the developer said.
