Capital nurse in Peru stint

A LOTHIANS nurse has spent time working in one of the world's poorest areas, allowing people to access the same level of healthcare that is available here.

Sue Aitken, an inflammatory bowel disease nurse practitioner at the Western General, was based on a "ship-cum-medical centre" in Peru.

Far from dealing with her standard work, one of her first patients was a boy with a piranha bite with only a rag to stem the bleeding.

She said: "Being able to bring some comfort to a child in a lot of pain was a very satisfying moment."
