CHEER up! Scots are not the miserable old gits of cartoon portrayal. We're happy. According to a new survey from St Andrew's House, we are among the happiest people across 23 European countries.
Scotland is one of nine countries in Europe whose citizens ranked top for life satisfaction. Out of a total possible score of ten, our mean score of 8.1 (don't ask about the .1) was higher than the rest of the UK, on only 7.2.

"It is a measure of our own subjective sense of wellbeing."

Presumably Bill Jamieson feels happier having delivered this doom-laden diatribe in trying to convince us that we have no reason to have this sense of well-being.

Many of the things he mentions are outwith our personal control.

Our personal sense of well-being is more related to how well we deal with things we can control plus what degree of hope we have for the future.

Bill has proved I cannot possibly be happy, I am happy that he is happy.
