Chess: How does White win? 04/02/2011

OUR coverage of that was the Wijk that was concludes today with the C group at the 73rd Tata Steel tournament, which, like the A & B groups, proved to be a close race with no runaway leader dominating the tournament.

The C group has always been a showcase for emerging talents, and this year it featured one of the world's most promising young players: Illya Nyzhnyk from Ukraine, who is currently the world's youngest grandmaster; a feat he achieved in December 2010 at the age of just 14 years and three months.

The "GM killer" first burst onto the scene at the age of ten when he stormed the B section of the Moscow Open to become the youngest player ever to win an adult international. In today's diagram, from round 11 at Wijk, Nyzhnyk is playing Benjamin Bok and shows phenomenal endgame technique beyond his years with the study-like finish of: 60 g4!! hxg4 61 h5 Ke5 62 Kg3 f5 63 h6 f4+ 64 Kxg4 Kf6 65 Kh5 f3 66 Nxf3 g4 67 Ng5 Nc6 68 Ne6 and Black resigned.

Nyzhnyk was involved in a two-horse race with the 21-year-old Italian GM Daniele Vocaturo. They met in the final round to decide first place – and in a crazy sacrificial game, Vocaturo had the gods on his side when he drew from a lost position.

Although Vocaturo took first place on 9/13 – a half point ahead of Nyzhnyk – the organisers opted to promote both players to next year's B group.
